Tracking kids in amusement parks

  • In amusement parks and exhibitions, tracking kids and important personnel is a difficult task. RFID helps in locating the child if access control mechanism is deployed. However it is not feasible to deploy turnstiles and other gates to register the access. WIFI tags can assist in these situations. Kids can wear wifi tags and can provide their location information while roaming freely in the environment.

Sounds interesting?

Jewelry management with RFID tags

Ever thought of what time the strong room incharge in a jewelry store reach home after verifying the stock?
For an efficient operator, it takes roughly 6 seconds to pick up and scan a barcode and update/physically verify the stock. If a typical store has 10,000 items and it would take 9500x6 if we assume 500 pieces were sold during the day. That will be approximately 15.8 hours for stock taking. You can imagine manual verification time!

RFID can help physical verification in a faster way and can effectively manage the inventory.

Contact or contactless for National ID?

Contact smart cards have the disadvantage of wear & Tear and the time taken for transaction starts after a contact is established. There is a possibility of the card being held back by mistake. Contactless cards on the otherhand have the advatage of compatitively high transaction rate and thoroughput is high.

China has considere contactless RFID for National ID and is creating infrastructure with contactless readers for verification.

One has to look at Long term cost analysis for maintenance before deciding the right card for National ID

Say Cheese for RFID

94-member cooperative of makers of Parmesan cheese in northern Italy successfully introduced RFID chips into their operation, which produces and handles several hundred thousand cheese wheels eachyear. Before you think this situation istrivial, look at the facts. The 30-kg(approximately 66-lb), tire-sized cheese wheels go through repeated aging cycles in climate-controlled warehouses for six to 36 months, andeach wheel is repeatedly graded duringthe process, by color, tap-sounding timbre, and even X-rays. Cheese-wheel prices range from less than $200 for an average one to more than $350 for atop-grade one. Making Parmesan is nota casual hobby; despite first appearances,it is a serious business.

The cheese makers in the area agreedto try embedding RFID chips into thecheese crust, because the previous method of branding the crust had shortcomings.Among them, the branded number gradually faded as the cheese was handled, and the branding didnothing to prevent the serious problemof counterfeit cheese wheels enteringthe supply chain. With RFID, the cheese makers can uniquely track and update the status of each cheesewheel and assure buyers of the cheese’sauthenticity.

RFID deployment is cheaper compared to Barcodes

RFID tags are rewritable..

Just for ROI, if it costs 1 cent to print a barcode label ( with all the printer, label, ribbon stock investment) and if 100,000 barcodes have to be printed to track in a work in progress application, it would cost 1000 dollars. A rugged tag can be bought at 10 to 12 dollars and maybe less if the environment does not demand ruggedness.

Try next time working with RFID technology for your closed loop applications.
